Pantry Organisation

As you may know we’ve recently done some renovation so have a new kitchen with a new walk in pantry. For the letter ‘P’ for the A to Z Challenge I’m writing about our pantry organisation.

Old Pantry

The pantry in our old kitchen was fairly large but the shelves were too deep. Every time I cleaned out my pantry I’d find lots of the same items. I hadn’t realised how much I had so would buy more.

New Pantry

In my new pantry I wanted mostly narrow shelves. Most of our shelves are only a couple of tins wide so I can’t lose stuff so easily.

The new pantry goes between the original house and the extension from 40+ years ago. There is a small wall return and the top of what was a wide doorway when a window was removed so that you could get into the newer part of the house. We’ve kept it there as it would have been costly to remove.

We also wanted a door on the pantry so due to this and above the first part of the pantry has shelves on an angle. The bottom shelves are fairly wide apart and then the gap becomes narrower. (We actually had an angled pantry when we got the kitchen replace in our old house.) In the back section of the pantry there is mainly narrow shelves except for a couple at the bottom. There’s also a space for the step ladder for reaching the high items in the pantry, kitchen and the rest of the house.

Pantry Organisation

So we keep things like cereal, baked biscuits and snacks in the front section so they are easy to access. In the back section is some unopened packets, tins, flours & sugar etc for baking, along with chips. I’ve put small items such as food colourings, icing tubes, vanilla etc in some ice-cream containers.

Up the top of the pantry we’ve put things that are bigger and/or we don’t use very often such as lazy Susan, water coolers, matches etc. We’ve got lids for re-use-able take-away containers in an empty ice-cream container.

I’ve also put a tray in the pantry so that I can get all the ingredients I need when I’m baking and don’t need to make multiple trips to the pantry. Well that’s the idea. It doesn’t always work that way.

Spice Organisation

The spices are in a drawer near the hotplates in the kitchen. My husband is going to make some angled racks for them to sit on, so that they will be organised and easy to see what I want.

Do you have any good tips for pantry organisation?
