My son was diagnosed with food intolerances and then so was my husband a few years later. They were both intolerant to eight foods each, three of which were the same. My son needed to avoid dairy, soy, potato & sulphites (preservative 220-228) among other things. While my husband couldn’t eat foods that contained gluten, sulphites or dairy, among other things. When my husband was diagnosed it added a new level of complexity as we not only had more foods to avoid but some things my son could eat but my husband couldn’t & vice versa. It was sometimes hard to find foods or recipes that they both could eat as many gluten free foods contain soy flour or potato flour! So I ended up adapting a lot of recipes, including our family recipes.
Over 25 years ago when my husband & I were getting married, my mother compiled a recipe book for us. She collected recipes from friends and family. Those tried and tested recipes included some of my family favourites, some of my husband’s family favourites and more. Thus, Mother’s and Others’ Recipes was created.
Since then my mother has edited the cookbook for the marriages of family and friends. Each time some new recipes were added & a few taken out. However, many of the original recipes still remain.
This recipe book has remained one of my most used recipe books, particularly with variations to cater for our dietary requirements.
You too can own this new digital version of Mothers’ and Others’ Recipes. This recipe book contains many of the original Mothers’ and Others’ Recipes but with adaptions to cater for different dietary needs. Most of the recipes have the original recipe and then suggested variations to make them:
- gluten free
- dairy free
- egg free
- soy free
- sulphite free
- nut free
Here’s what others have said about some of the recipes they’ve tried:
I tried the recipes last weekend. And they were great! The substitutions you suggest for egg worked really well! – NarelleDoesn’t crumble, light and soft on inside, melts in mouth, suitably sweet and doesn’t taste like gluten free. – DerekMade the gluten free puftaloons this morning, they were delicious! – SallyPreferred the dairy free/gluten free version more than the original!! – John
May from Brizzy Mays Books and Bruschetta has reviewed the cookbook. Here’s what she said about the recipes: “They are easy to read and to follow. More importantly these are all meals that can be integrated into everyday meal times.”
