With it being International Hamburger Day last week and as Chicken Burgers were on our menu in the last week I thought I would share some of the gluten free hamburger bun options that we have used. Many of the hamburger buns are dairy free or can easily be made dairy free as well.

Bread and bread products were one thing that my husband really missed when he started eating gluten free. As many of the commercial gluten free breads contain sulphites (preservatives 220-228) my husband mainly has corn or rice thins instead of bread or bread rolls. However, we have found a few recipes that make a good gluten free bread roll and can be used a hamburger bun.

Super Soft Paleo Grain-Free Seed Bread Rolls

This was one of the first gluten and dairy free bread roll options that we tried. After having nothing like this for a long time, they were a great option. As the name suggests they are super soft. They are made with a number of ground up seeds and coconut flour. You can make the rolls any size you like and they are quick and easy to make with no need to wait for rising. We used these for hamburgers, chicken burgers and I’ve even turned them into garlic bread.

Dairy-Free Crusty Herb Popovers

These are great as an accompaniment to any meal but could also be used to make mini-hamburgers. Or could be made larger in pie tins or similar for a more normal sized hamburger. They are popular with anyone, including people who aren’t gluten free as well. The batter is quite runny but they puff up beautifully.

Gluten Free Artisan Bread Rolls

I only started making this bread recipe last year even though it’s in the Quirky Cooking recipe book which I’ve had for about 7 years. After making bread a few times I decided to make rolls. Now I’ll often make 1 loaf of bread and 4 bread rolls; or 1 pizza base and 4 bread rolls. Instead of shaping the dough into 2 loaves you can make 8 bread rolls.

Extra Puffy Brazilian Cheese Puff Buns

This would be our favourite of all the recipes. To accompany a meal or as finger food I’ll make them up in mini muffin trays. For hamburger buns I make them in pie tins. As they do have cheese they contain dairy but I have made them with dairy free cheese. They are a bit denser if you use dairy free cheese but still taste good. If you make a hamburger with these you do not need to add cheese to the fillings as there are cheese in the rolls.

Easy Gluten Free Dinner Rolls

When I was looking through my bread recipes to remember what different bread roll or hamburger bun options I had made I found a number of recipes that I’d like to try. This is one of those recipes and although I haven’t tried it I think it would work quite well. I’ve made dough recipes with yoghurt and flour before for things like pizza scrolls and they’ve worked well. I would use coconut yoghurt to keep it dairy free and probably wouldn’t use the yeast (which is optional).

Possible Hamburger Fillings

Meat and salad are the obvious choices for hamburger fillings. You can butter the hamburger bun or top with mayonaise or spread on some avocado. We’ll often use my rissole recipe for the meat or hamburger patty component. Any leftover meat is a great choice including pulled beef, mexican meatballs or chicken schnitzel. Salad toppings could include tomato, cucumber, mushroom, grated carrot, cheese, spinach, lettuce and to be truly Australian – beetroot. Bacon and or egg are other great toppings to include.
