As we went away for a week in late August I managed to read 6 books this month including 3 novels.
Here’s what I read this month:
Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives by Gretchen Rubin
As the title suggests the book is about developing habits. Rubin talks about how you can start & maintain habits. I like the fact that she often says that we need to do what works for you. She gives lots of ideas but it depends on your personality and other factors on which things might help form good habits. So she also looks at different personalities in relation to habits. I think this is a book that I might want to refer to again.
Home to Holly Springs by Jan Karon
This is another of the books in the Mitford Series. This one was about Father Tim getting a letter calling him home, to the town he grew up in, but hadn’t returned to in decades. He returns to Holly Springs, meets some new people and catches up with people and places that he hasn’t visited for a long time. A great read!
Poke the Box: When Was the Last Time You Did Something for the First Time?by Seth Godin
A little but powerful book that I want to read again. The basic message is if you have an idea do something about it.
Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks
You know it’s a good book when it moves you to tears. Russel Green has it all but then he finds himself being a single dad, caring for a young daughter while trying to launch a business. It has a nice twist at the end that I didn’t pick.
The Little Angel by Rosie Goodwin
Set in late 1800’s & early 1900’s. Sunday runs a Children’s Home with her husband, mother and some others. The story is mainly about Kitty who is left on the doorstep as a baby when the story begins. When she is 17 she is summoned to live in London with her birth mother.
Yusra Mardini was born in Syria. This is her story of growing up in Syria, fleeing when she was 17 & what happened after that. Swimming is her life and she ends up at the 2016 Olympics on the Refugee Olympic team. I was very moved by the story particularly as Yusra is the same age as my daughter. So while my daughter was sitting QCS (statewide test for all year 12’s who want to go to uni) Yusri was trying to make her way from Turkey to Greece by an overcrowded small boat.
So with 6 books read in August that brings my total for the year so far to 41 books.
