April Reading Log

This reading log contains some books that I read in March but forgot to put on the March list, as well as the books I finished reading in April.

Lady reading by the water with the words "Reading Log April 2020"

Here’s 3 books that I read last month and forgot to add to my reading log:

In March my daughter & I attended the Omega Writer’s book Fair. We were given some books, bought some books and then my daughter won some books. Thanks to May from Brissy May’s Books & Bruschetta for letting me know about this book fair. I had been a couple of years ago but hadn’t heard about it this year, until May sent me some information. These first 2 books are books I bought at the fair.

Burn My Letters by Ruth Bonetti

Ruth Bonetti shares the story of her great uncle. He and her grandfather immigrate to Australia, from Finland in the early 20th century. Using letters and memories shared from Finnish relatives Bonetti looks at why he was forced to flee Finland and how this affected the rest of his life. It was a fascinating read and I really enjoyed it.

My daughter & I had a great conversation with Ruth at the book fair and I bought this book and my daughter bought Midnight Sun to Southern Cross. I’ll write about this book when I’ve read it.

More Precious than Pearls by Anne Hamilton & Natalie Tensen

A small book but very interesting. They take a look at 7 characteristics of women & mothers portrayed in the Bible and looks at the naunces of the Hebrew text which is not normally found in English translations. From the prologue “The influence of society in the intellectual West even affects the way mothers are presented in the Bible. Their role tends to be glossed over and sidelined in translations and commentaries.”

Braving the Wilderness: The quest for true belonging and the courage to stand alone by Brene Brown

A great book which I think I need to read again, to take more in. Brene Brown looks at what it means to truly belong, particularly in an age of increased polarisation. She looks at true belonging through 4 practices that challenge how we think about ourselves, connect with one another and find our way back to courage.

The books I read this month:

Searching for Grace by Carol Henderson and Heather Tovey

Heather was raised by a retired governess and throughout her childhood & much of her adulthood never knew who her birth parents were and she never even had a birth certificate. She was born in London, married quite young and went back to New Zealand with her husband who was from New Zealand. This is her story of her life and her quest to find out who her parents were. Another fascinating story and hard to comprehend what people did to keep up appearances.

Polly’s Pride by Freda Lightfoot

Set in the late 1920’s & early 30’s, Polly Pride lives in a deprived area of Manchester and feels more fortunate than most until her husband Matthew loses his job. To save her family from starvation she sells all the families possessions and buys a handcart to start selling second-hand rugs. When tragedy strikes, Polly needs to summon all her courage to keep her family from falling apart.

Writing To God: 40 Days of Praying with My Pen by Rachel G. Hackenberg

I started using this book a few years ago but never finished it. For Lent this year, I decided to use one prompt each day. There are actually extra prompts for Holy Week. So it took me longer than Lent but I did finish it. Each day there is a poem or writing by the author on the theme, a Bible passage and a prompt to write a prayer. It was a different way to pray but I did enjoy it.
