Valiant – Anzac Day

ANZAC?

It’s Anzac Day here in Australia and it’s also commemorated in New Zealand. It’s a day where we remember all who have fought valiantly for our country. Anzac Day marks the day on 25 April, 1915 when Australian and New Zealand forces first faced major military conflict, at Gallipoli, in the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers who fought in those forces quickly became none as Anzacs.

Anzac Day

Anzac Day ceremonies were first held on April 25, 1916. I’ve read an old letter sent home from Australian soldier serving in England, that talks about the day being commemorated in about 1918. For many years Anzac day has been marked as a day of National Remembrance. All around the country and at Gallipoli services take place at dawn and marches occur later in the day.

As a teenager I remember marching as part of my Girl Guide troupe in the Anzac march in the town I lived in. My daughter marched every year with her high school band at Samford and in Brisbane City.

Anzac Biscuits

Another thing that is associated with the Anzac are Anzac biscuits. These biscuits were originally called solider biscuits and made by wives and women’s groups to send to soldiers. They were made from ingredients that kept during the time it took to get to the soldiers.

A few years ago I developed a gluten free version of the Anzac biscuit recipe.
