Sweet Potato Information

We really started eating sweet potatoes when my son couldn’t eat ordinary potato. Sweet Potato is not related to ordinary potatoes, so he could eat them. Kumara is another name for Sweet Potatoes. There’s more information about Sweet Potatoes here including popular sweet potato recipes.

In Australia there are 4 types of sweet potatoes, grown. The type I have and usually buy is Gold with gold skin and orange flesh, also called orange sweet potato.

Some of the information I’ve read suggests not storing your sweet potatoes in the fridge. I store my ordinary potatoes in the cupboard. However, ever since some rats ate my sweet potatoes I’ve stored them in the fridge.

Sweet Potatoes can be substituted for ordinary potatoes in most recipes. My potato salad recipe can be made with sweet potato or ordinary potatoes. I’m sure you can boil sweet potato and eggs together if you want to as well. I’ve often made the Grain-free Dough, from Life Changing Food, with sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are often moister once cooked, so you may need to adjust liquid in some recipes.

  • Bacon Wrapped Sweet Potato Wedges
  • GF Sweet Potato Scones
  • Lime and Kumara Butter Cake – Australian Women’s Weekly Potato Cookbook – This is a recipe I used to make when my son was first dairy, soy, potato, etc free. I simply substituted the butter for nuttelex and the milk for dairy free milk (probably oat milk at the time).
  • Pecan Fudge Brownies with Sweet Potato Frosting – I made this a few weeks ago but the frosting went moldy, so I’d recommend storing it in the fridge.

  1. Great post which has also provided me with heaps of ideas – Thank you.
I had a girl friend around for lunch last week and cooked a salad and quiche. Instead of pastry I lined the quiche pan with sliced sweet potato and cooking for 15 minutes before adding and cooking the egg mixture. Delicious:)
