She shares stories of caring for patients who are often severely ill but lost in the jungle of bureaucracy. She also shares what effect this work has on her life personally. An honest, open account, with some horrible stories but also some hope in there as well.
Cold Tangerines: Celebrating the Extraodinary Nature of Everyday Life by Shauna Niequist
In a collection of short stories Shauna celebrates the extraordinary moments hidden in everyday life. A chapter called “Writing in Pencil” really resonated with me. It was about how we often plan our lives but it doesn’t always turn out that way. For me I can think of several examples of how I thought life would turn out one way but it has turned out differently. This chapter obviously resonated with a few people as I googled it and found several posts about it, including this one.
In the Company of Others by Jan Karon
Another of the Mitford books. In this one Father Tim and his wife, Cynthia go on a holiday to Ireland and are meant to travel around with Father Tim’s cousin & wife. However Cynthia hurts her ankle and they end up staying in the one fishing lodge the whole time. The story is about what happens and how Father Tim ministers to the family who run the fishing lodge and other locals.
Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good by Jan Karon
Father Tim is back in Mitford after their Ireland holiday. He’s still working out what to do in his retirement. He continues to minister to others as he helps out at the local bookshop a couple of days a week and attempts to help Dooley’s (his adopted son) younger brother who has had a very troubled childhood.
So with 5 books read in September that brings my total books read in the year so far to 46 books. At 3/4 of the way through the year I’ve read 4 books more than this time last year.
