We’ve been in our house for over 10 years now. During that time we’ve always talked about moving the laundry upstairs to be closer to the outside clothesline. Our kitchen is finally being renovated and there is going to be some changes to the layout in the house.
We’ve gone through various places of where we could put it. For quite a while we thought we’d put it down one end of our kitchen when we renovated it but changed our mind in the end.
So our renovations are starting this week. Watch this video to get an idea of what we’re doing.
We’re taking out the wall between the kitchen and the lounge room and part of the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. My husband has already bricked in our old back door from the kitchen to outside. We don’t use it since we changed a window in the dining room to bi-fold doors.
So our new kitchen will be U-shaped with a longer bit on one side the ‘U’. We’ll have fridge, oven & microwave on one side with the sink and dishwasher at the bottom of the ‘U’ and high cupboards all along the other side with drawers under the bench and the hot plates in the middle.
In what is called a utility room on the original plan, has been an office space and has also had our new fridge as it didn’t fit in the space for the fridge in the kitchen. On one side of this room, back to the stairs we’re going to have a walk in pantry and on the other side we’re going to block off a door and have a small laundry.
So yesterday we finished emptying everything out, including the lounge and dining room as all the floors are going to be polished. Under the carpet and the lino are beautiful hard wood floors. We’ve already done the dining room but the whole area will be done now.
My husband has already pulled up the lino, removed the masonite and pulled up all the staples and nails in the kitchen and utility room. He’s also blocked up one side of what was a window & has been and opening for 40+ years which will end up being cupboards on the kitchen side and the pantry on the other side.
Monday I baked all afternoon as we will be without a kitchen & an oven for a few weeks. So my freezer is now full. I made:
- a double batch of Chocolate Brownies
- Peanut Butter Cookies
- Macadamia Nut Blondies
- Maple Quinoa Biscuits
- roasted nuts and seeds for Grain Free Granola from Life Changing Food Cookbook
I’m hoping to video a couple of times a week to show progress so subscribe to my YouTube channel or follow Feed My Family on Facebook to keep updated.
Where making a mock-up kitchen downstairs in the existing laundry so will have a sink and some bench & cupboard space. Any tips for coping with renovations? What quick and easy meals do you recommend to make on a BBQ, with a microwave, Bellini Thermo Machine or an electric fry pan?

How exciting, Jill! Great to see this video and look forward to following the progress!
Hi Jill!
Thank you for sharing videos on your renovation project. The kitchen is probably the most important part of the house, especially in your case and mine…
I highly approve the idea of having the laundry area close to the patio — at our son’s place it is relegated to a dark basement and I hate it!
As for meals, I suggest lots of salads, with or without starches, (rice, potatoes, quinoa), with or without animal protein. But as I am typing, you probably don’t need them any more!
Thanks for your comments & suggestions, Joelle.
We usually hang our washing in the backyard, so this is going to make it so much closer to the laundry.
The new kitchen is still not quite ready. The weather has certainly been warm enough for salads. My husband is not a salad fan but I’ve been eating salads most lunches. With all the electrical appliances it’s mainly been an issue not having an oven to bake biscuits & the like.
