Easter & school holidays were during April. I managed to get away for 2 long weekends so managed to read a number of novels this month. I think that keeping this reading log has made me read a wider variety of books.
Here are the books that I finished reading in April:
Wardrobe Crisis by Clare Press
This book caught my eye at the library. From the blurb “Who makes your clothes? This used to be an easy question to answer: it was the seamstress next door, or the tailor on the high street – or you made them yourself. … In Wardrobe Crisis, fashion journalist Clare Press explores the history and ethics behind what we wear.” It really challenged me to think about the clothes I purchase & wear. The manufacture of clothing can & does hurt people & the environment. It has challenged me to ‘buy less but choose well’ or as someone else in the book put it ‘refusing, reducing, reusing’.
The Lake House by Kate Morton
I think this is the first novel of Kate’s that I have read. It was about a mystery that spanned 70 years, so it went back and forth in time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and want to read more of her novels. I purchased this book at a garage sale & will donate it back.
Heritage by Judy Nunn
A great read and made me look for more from Judy Nunn when I was in the library. Based on historical events but with a fictional story-line and characters, set in the 50’s during the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme in Australia and also looking back at World War II.
The Obsession by Nora Roberts
Another great read. The blurb starts “Naomi Carson is a survivor. As a child, her family was torn apart by a shocking crime …”. I had some thoughts about what this might mean but was totally shocked when I found out about the “shocking crime” in the first chapter of the book.
Rain Music by Di Morrissey
I chose this book because it is set in Australia & have enjoyed reading Di Morrissey’s books in the past. I did not enjoy this one as much for some reason, perhaps it was because I read it straight after The Obsession. It did have an unexpected twist that I never would have picked.
Second Chance Friends by Jennifer Scott
“Karen, Melinda, and Joanna have never met until the morning they witness an accident outside a local diner – rush to help.” This book is about how 4 lives become intertwined after this accident. An interesting read and I would like to read more of Jennifer Scott’s work.
Heaven Sent Rain by Lauraine Snelling
Lauraine Snelling is a Christian author & I have read many of her Blessings series of novels. This was a great read about a very interesting concept of 2 very different people coming together & how they help each other; along with the underlying theme of a company that is trying to help people with their products.
Elianne by Judy Nunn
Another novel from Judy Nunn based on historical events with fictional characters. This one was mainly set in the 60’s on a fictional property near the very real town of Bundaberg (or Bundy as we say here in Queensland). A real page turner that makes you want to find out what is the secret revealed in the diaries.
The Nesting Place by Myquillyn Smith
I read about this book when it was first published in 2014, on several blogs that I follow but didn’t think I really needed to read a book about home decorating. I happened to see it at the library last time I was there & decided to borrow it. I’m so glad I did. Even though the book is about home decorating, Myquillyn Smith shares her story. I could totally relate to moving 13 times in 18 years as I lived in 9 houses during my childhood & teenage years. Normally I would not read this sort of book from cover to cover but totally did with this one. I may even be confident enough to make a few decor changes to our house. I also thought I was following Myquillyn’s blog but wasn’t, so I am now.
So in April I finished a total of 9 books.
This brings my total for the year to date to 24 books.
